Influenza has been considered to have a season in the past. There is a peak for influenza season, usually between December thru March in the northern hemisphere. However, in this day and age the world is very much connected and this makes for the possibility of influenza all year round. The interconnected world we live in due to travel makes it much easier for microorganisms to spread throughout all continents. So let’s protect ourselves against the flu and know how to treat it once it hits. The best way to protect oneself from the flu is prevention. This is achieved through the current year Influenza vaccine. Once the vaccine is received, the recipient ‘s immune system will develop antibodies against the flu. The vaccine does not protect against the common cold. If one contracts influenza and is aware within 48 hours of symptoms onset there is an option to receive Oseltamivir (Tamiflu). This drug may decrease the length of time of symptoms. The flu can also be overcome by one’s immune system and giving it proper support. Supporting the immune system consists of adequate hydration about eight 8 ounce glasses of water per 24 hour period along with other clear liquids. It is best to avoid sodas since there is no substantial nutrition in them and the sodas which contain caffeine may actually further dehydration. Adequate rest, avoiding smoke and alcohol is also important to foster the body’s ability to recover.
A hot cup of soup or tea is also beneficial.
