The Treatment-Based classification system for low back pain has been revised from the 1995 and 2007. It is now more evidenced based and takes the psychosocial aspects into account. A two level triage is recommended beginning with an initial triage by a first contact healthcare provider and a secondary triage by a rehabilitative provider. This approach ensures the most appropriate rehabilitative modality. It also takes into account two types of patients, those with more serious medical disease or central sensitization and those who can self manage. The idea behind the classification is to facilitate care by the rehabilitative provider.
